9mm Defensive Ammo Ballistics Test

What's up everybody, welcome back! This week I spent some money (much to the dismay, but with the permission of Mrs. Rifleman) and bought some ballistics gel! I bought a 10% FBI Block (16"x6"x6"), a mould, and the 9mm Test Kit #1 (10% FBI Block, and 12 rounds of various 9mm defensive ammo: listed below) from Clear Ballistics, and so far, I've been incredibly impressed with their service. I haven't opened the product yet, I'll be doing that this weekend in our video.

This is not a paid sponsorship.

The gun I'll be demo'ing this week is the Smith and Wesson M&P9 Shield. This is an older Shield, so it's not the M2.0 or Shield plus. I really like the feel of this gun, it's slim and comfortable. The grip seems to be at a good angle to index quickly and has just enough texture to hang on to, but not so much to be abrasive if you're holding onto it for awhile. I'm pretty excited to have gotten my hands on the Shield for this demo. The gun comes with a flush fit 7 round mag and an extended 8 round mag. The extended mag fits alot more comfortably in my bear paws (I wear XL or XXL depending on the glove). The flush fit just leaves my pinky finger hanging.

The ammunition included with the Clear Ballistics 9mm Test Kit #1 contains 2 rounds each of the following defense ammo:

- ICC 100gr Green Elite
Muzzle Velocity: 1,150 FPS
Muzzle Energy: 295 ft lbs

*Details from the Ventura Munitions website* (ICC does not have info on their website)
International Cartridge Corporation has developed a Frangible Lead-Free Special Duty Hollow Point.  This ammunition is designed to create a safer more effective duty round for today's law enforcement. Conventional lead-based duty rounds expand creating only one wound channel. International Cartridge's Green Elite HP Duty fragments and creates several wound channels giving a better chance for a one-shot stop. Additionally,  Green Elite HP Duty's fragmentation properties significantly reduce the potential for damage/injury from ricochet.

- Winchester 147gr PDX1 Defender
Muzzle Velocity: 1,000 FPS
Muzzle Energy: 326 ft lbs

*Details from the Winchester website*
Engineered to maximize terminal ballistics as defined by FBI test protocol, PDX1 Defender ammunition provides maximum stopping power for the ultimate in personal defense. Our innovative bonding process welds the jacket to lead core for improved penetration, 1.5x expansion and the proven performance you rely on when the stakes are high.

- Hollow Point
Expands up to 1.5x the original diameter resulting in maximum stopping power

- Notched Jacket
Preprogrammed to expand into six uniform segments for consistent tactical performance

- Proprietary Bonding Process
Welds jacket to lead resulting in improved penetration and retained weight

- Federal Premium 150gr HST
Muzzle Velocity: 900 FPS
Muzzle Energy: 270 ft lbs

*Details from the Federal Premium website*
Subcompact handguns' sleek, lightweight designs make them an ideal choice for concealed carry. But to perform to their peak, they need the right ammunition: Federal Premium Personal Defense Micro HST. The line provides consistent expansion, optimum penetration and superior terminal performance with bullet weights and propellants optimized for the most efficient cycling and accuracy in subcompact handguns.

- Heavy bullet and lower velocity decreases felt recoil and noise

- Expanded diameter and weight retention produce the desired penetration for self-defense situations, without over-penetrating

- Bullet nose profile, nickel-plated case and high-performance primer provide the ultimate in function and reliability in semi-automatic handguns

- Clean-burning, low-flash propellants

- Speer 124gr Gold Dot
Muzzle Velocity: 1,150 FPS
Muzzle Energy: 364 ft lbs

*Details from the Speer website*
Our original Gold Dot line remains a benchmark for both self-defense and duty use, and it's earned the trust of law enforcement world-wide. It features a pressure-formed lead core that's bonded to an extremely uniform jacket a single atom at a time. This virtually eliminates separation on impact for more retained weight and penetration to crucial depths. Its Gold Dot hollow-point design expands consistently through the full range of barriers. Ignition and cycling are guaranteed thanks to sealed primers and nickel-plated brass.

- Structural-plated, pressure-formed core
- Uni-Cor bonding
- Gold Dot hollow point design
- Nickel-plated
- Sealed primer

- Hornady 135gr Critical Duty
Muzzle Velocity: 1,010 FPS
Muzzle Energy: 306 ft lbs

*Details from the Hornady website*
Designed to meet the needs of those who demand superior barrier penetration and prefer a full-size handgun for their personal protection. Critical Duty® is loaded with the tough Hornady® FlexLock® bullet that delivers "barrier blind" performance when shot through common urban barriers.

The FlexLock® bullet incorporates two revolutionary Hornady® features to deliver superior barrier penetration and consistent performance in FBI tactical handgun ammunition tests (FBI Protocol).

The patented Hornady® Flex Tip® design eliminates clogging and aids bullet expansion. A large mechanical jacket-to-core InterLock® band works to keep the bullet and core from separating for maximum weight retention, excellent expansion, consistent penetration and terminal performance through all FBI test barriers.

Bright nickel-plated cases simplify chamber checks in reduced light. Additionally, all Critical Duty® ammunition is loaded with low flash propellant to help preserve night vision in low-light firing.

FBI Tested and Selected

- Sig Sauer 124gr V-Crown
Muzzle Velocity: 1,165 FPS
Muzzle Energy: 364 ft lbs

*Details from the Sig website*
"SIG V-Crown defensive rounds combine perfected material specifications and fine-tuned design innovations, including a stacked hollow point cavity, to deliver exceptional on-target energy with maximum weight retention and optimal expansion for ultimate stopping power."
